Big Red Rooster ‘How You Like That’ Live

Damn it’s been a long weekend in D town but Im back at my desk now and ready to start sharing some of the videos and news of the weekend. First up I’ve got a little video of The Big Red Rooster and they’re single ‘How You Like That’ performed live at Cirque in downtown Dallas. It was a good night and the crowd was definitely feeling the guys. If you haven’t been paying attention to the news about them lately on here then you might want to start. The band has energy and with all the mixed styles, they have a unique sound that has big mainstream music possibilities. So enjoy the video and comment it up because the guys are checking the site out and like to hear what you have to say! You can always check out more of this at TrillSouth.com for real hip hop news!

Kenika ‘Diary of a Hood Chick’ Mixtape Review

Maybe you guys remember me mentioning Kenika in the past or putting up the video of her SXSW performance. Well I’ve not had in my hands for a minute her new mixtape ‘The Diary of a Hood Chick’ and if you’re on some other sh!t about female rappers then you need to hear it.

I’ll admit to you that Im not the biggest fan of most female rappers but Kenika she shows alot more than most women do on the mic, lyrically and with some depth. She’s not just a booty dropping bopper from the H who has some sex rhymes, she’s a real chick, a hood chick and she’s got rhymes about things from her point of view, street life, family, love and the trials and tribulations of living. Trill Fam Review

trill fam boosie webbie foxxxSo I know you’ve already got your hands on that Trill Fam release from just a few weeks ago, but in case you’ve been living in a cave or under a rock Im going to break it down for you and let you know if its worth buying or not. I got my hands on a copy a few weeks back, right about the time of the release and have been listening to it in the slab since then, so thats already a good sign.

Normally when I get something to review I give it a few plays but if its not worth the money then I dont even have it in the ride for more than 2 or 3 days before it becomes a drink coaster on the computer desk. The Trill Fam album featuring Boosie, Webbie and Foxx among a few others is definitely not a drink coaster and if you’re in the south it’s going to bang in your slab at least until that new UGK drops. People were always telling me to check his shit out but I just wasnt hearing it. Well with this latest release ‘Waitin to Inhale’ released today March 20th Im finally becoming a fan. It’s not too often that Im willing to buy a CD in the store anymore. Im big on mixtapes for the freshest and hottest lyrics and whats hitting the streets most of the time but today I bought this CD based on the hype thats surrounding it. (more…)

Mixtape Messiah 2 Review

chamillionaire mixtape messiah 2So yeah Chamillionaire recently dropped his followup to the original Mixtape Messiah that dropped a few years ago with 3 discs worth of music. This time it’s just one disc and I hate to say it as much as I like his music most of the time the mixtape just is really lacking in quality. Maybe it was rushed and I know he’s much busier today with all the success of his major label album that he finally dropped and work on a new one for release in just a couple months but this one leaves me wanting alot more than I got.

But anyway let’s get on with the review and a link where you can download it yourself. Cham wanted this one to be out there and to be free and you know he’s big on the internet and his own website so you can download it right from him, as that was the source for the release of the mixtape and I’d hope to see other artists doing the same. Big Tuck - Absolute Truth Review

big tuck So here it finally is the official review of the brand new Big Tuck release. It’s hit first release on a major and has been in the works for a minute and I have to tell you he’s doing Texas and Dallas proud with this one.

The south is blowing up and on fire right now and there are tons of artists starting to drop music on the country and Tuck is one of the lesser known. He’s still not getting that major play nationwide but he’s definitely more deserving than a few of the better known artists that are getting it. The Absolute Truth is easy to listen to from start to finish and you don’t have to keep skipping and hitting buttons trying to find something worth bumping while you’re riding. (more…)

Hezeleo - Block Starz Mixtape Review

hezeleo block starz Alright so just this past week my boy from PA, Texas dropped a copy of his latest mixtape on me to see what I thought was up. PA that’s Port Arthur for those of you that don’t know and if you don’t know what that is you don’t know southern rap yet and I’m going to sprinkle some knowledge on you. That’s home of the legendary duo called UGK, that’s Bun B and Pimp C and now you know who I’m talking about. Well Hezeleo is from their hood and signed to their newly put together UGK Records and he’s starting to get out there a little more and let it be known whats up.

Right off the top I could tell that it had that same UGK flavor that I know and have always been a fan of. So if you like UGK, you’re going to eat this shit up and ask for more. Now I listened straight through from begining to end without skipping a single track and that’s alot of tracks, 30 to be exact and there are plenty of them that are strong. Many of the beats are recognizeable and that’s because it’s a mixtape but the lyrical skills are there and they’re good, enough to carry this mixtape through the whole way. (more…)

Big Ben Hard Hood Classics Mixtape Review

big ben hardhood classicsYo my boy Big Ben hooked me up with a fresh new copy of his mixtape Hard Hood Classics - Live From Funkytown. You already know that in the south the next spot about to blow is Dallas, or the DFW Metro area, that’s Dallas and Fort Worth for those of you that don’t know. Big Ben could be one of the guys that gets a chance to get caught up in the heat as he and his boys at 3 Big Entertainment start doing bigger things.

Now I’ll admit I hadn’t heard much of his stuff before so I didnt know what to expect, hell I didnt even know what he sounded like. I got the mixtape earlier this week and have been playing it steady for several days now and I’ve decided that I like it. Now it’s a mixtape so you can expect mixtape type of songs, sometimes that means lyrics over someone elses beats or songs. But there’s some shit defintely worth checking out and you can really just about listen to it from start to finish without having to skip around. (more…)

Heavy In the Streets Part 5 RIP DJ Smallz Review

dj scream heavy in the streets 5No DJ Smallz hasn’t passed away but as far as DJ Scream and HoodRich are concerned his mixtapes in the south have. So there you get RIP DJ Smallz, the HoodRich crew has addressed the southern DJ on many levels in this latest mixtape and it sounds pretty good whether you feel the beef or not. So what’s the beef, well you can hear a little about it in various moments on the mixtape in between tracks, but I’m guessing they aren’t too happy with what they say is Smallz copying or stealing styles and ideas. Either way you can feel this mix pretty much from start to finish and it’s a strong statement for the crew from Hotlanta. (more…)

Pimpalation Return of the Trill DVD Review

pimpalationUnless you’re living in a cave then you already know that Pimp C is back on the streets. Pimp has been dropping lyrics and heat all over singles for every major southern rapper you can think of including himself and for upcoming UGK shit. The first big thing to hit the streets since he’s been out is the Pimpalation DVD that’s been out for a little less than 2 weeks now and I got my copy courtesy of The Mixunit this weekend. So you know I’ve already watched that shit like 3 times because it’s the Return of the Trill and here’s the Trill review from GrippinGrain.com with pics!

So what is the Pimpalation DVD you’re wondering. Obviously it’s Pimp C but it’s also the story of Pimp C and UGK from the start, inside prison and after the release. It’s got videos from all the latest hot singles that are getting dropped with TI, Lil Flip, Z-Ro, (more…)
