It’s a sad day in Texas and Southern Hip Hop. Pimp C has passed away this morning and its not a joke or a rumor. He’s gone, the godfather of Texas rap some would call him. I thought I’d let you all know, but you can find out a lot more and post comments and share your thoughts and memories about Pimp C on TrillSouth. I’ve got some unseen video, stories and just thoughts and comments.

I know we’re all surprised to hear the news but Big Moe has passed away now. He passed away yesterday after battling in the hospital for several days. Our hearts go out to his family, though for those of us in the south who’ve been around for a while we were his family. The SUC was his family, Houston and Texas were his family and we’ll surely miss him, but we know he’ll have peace now. Check out the little video tribute to him over at TrillSouth.

I know I started this site out with a lot of dirty south news but I recently found and got a better running dirty south site on my bookmarks list and I thought I’d tell you to check it out. It’s called TrillSouth and its always full of the hottest news, videos, free mixtapes and all the good shit that you want. So I recommend and you’ll still find news here just not as much, but Im going to keep shit popping without a doubt!

Im going to keep it real simple today, its not about the hip hop or the industry, it’s Memorial Day and we need to keep a thought on those who serve and have served our country in many different ways.

Although we might struggle and some of us have been in the streets, we might not have had the happiest homes or the best childhood. We’ve still got that American Dream thanks in part to those that served our countries. In the past they did it because it was what was right across this country, to fight and defend the freedom we have here or at least the opportunities that we have.

It’s less out of doing it for the right reasons today and more out of economics and job opportunities and lets face it being able to pay for college. But that doesnt make it any less important when kids go overseas to fight wars that they or we approve of or not. They do it because thats what they do, and thats who they are and the wounded come back and want to do it again.

Many of us have family in the services and veterans in our families so take a moment to think of that person today. Think of the great generation of WWII that are disappearing right now. The Viet Nam vets that were underappreciated, the Korean War vets, Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Iraq as well as the numerous small missions in between and throughout.

Look up at that sky today and taste that BBQ and realize it might not always be beautiful but theres always opportunity and on Tuesday you can grind harder and get what you want and its in part thanks to those that fought and gave for us all to have that opportunity.

Yeah I probably went on and on and maybe didnt make sense in part but this is serious and this is real talk. We’ll get back to hip hop and the south tomorrow.

Alright people I wanted to drop this on you. Yours truly has taken over a southern blog on SOHH.com, Im talking about SOHH Dirty. I’ll be writing there and here, and mixing it up. It should mean more hip hop for all of us. Now back to your regularly scheduled listening and pron viewing. So it’s that time of the year about and the SXSW event is about to go down in Austin this month. Read further to see the event list and the link. If you’re a music fan this is the spot for you, and if you’re a hip hop fan lookout for that Ozone hosted night on Saturday because there is some serious business going down. You can skim through it all and find plenty of diverse music and for the southern rap heads don’t worry there will be a UGK sighting at this event. That’s right I said UGK, not just Pimp or Bun, but the full UGK and Im betting you can hear some of that new shit they’re about to drop mixed in between the classics I know I grew up on.

I’m still here and not going anywhere. Yeah the updates haven’t been flying out like I had hoped but 2007 is about to be big not just for Texas, but for GrippinGrain.com so stay tuned. This weekend lightning blew up nearly anything electronic that I owned so I’ve got things on order to get myself back and running again. Then you can stay tuned for more hot hoes, hot flows, the album reviews and peeks at the UGK upcoming double album that’s got the south waiting. So sit back and do what you do and I’m about to drop some gems on you this year soon as I’m back and running.

What does that title mean? Well it’s 28 days, thats right exactly 4 weeks out and we’re all waiting on UGK to drop the much anticipated awaited jewel of an album. How many of you can still hear or listen to that UGK “One Day” occasionally while you’re riding? Me I hear it all the time and I’m looking for them to drop something like that on us again. (more…)

That boy in Houston again Matt Sonzala has just hooked up a flyer here talking about the BBC 1Xtra channel coming to Houston to do a few tv shows and live events. For those of you that don’t know, BBC 1Xtra is the biggest source of hip hop in the UK, that’s right I’m talking about England and yeah they speak English for those of you that didn’t finish school.

Anyway they’re coming and you can get in and be part of the live event if you get in early enough and maybe get your mug on tv, other than that time you were on a security camera tape on the local news. For those of you underground indy artists in Texas and Louisiana the boys at StreetPharmacy and HoustonSoReal are doing a 2nd meet and greet this coming week. Great way to for DJ’s and artists to get in touch and get some business done. Get started on mixtapes, getting your music out and start blowing up.
