Soldiers United 4 Cash

Alright so my boy REL hooked me up with a copy of his DJ Screw documentary Soldiers United 4 Cash. So you’re like alright what the fuck is that. Well I’ll tell you it’s some history of the DJ Screw and his infamous crew from Houston, the Screwed Up Click.

Right now many of you might see guys like Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thugg and of course Lil Flip blowing up the spot for the south and putting Houston on the map. But the game didn’t start with these guys, nor did the style. Back in the early 90’s we had a man putting together his new technique and pinned himself DJ Screw for his screwed up beats and flows. Well SU4C tells you about that man and how it all began from his life as a child to the birth of the Screwed Up Click which ulitmately influenced and gave birth to the Houston crew that see you doing big things on MTV and BET now.

I was checking the movie out and it’s got some real raw footage, exclusives of freestyles, behind the scenes and interviews with guys before they were stars, back when they were repping H-Town before it was the popular thing to do. I’m talking video and clips of Big Moe, Pokey, Botany Boys, Z-Ro back before Rap A Lot, and of course Lil Flip.

Step by step we hear about artists of the screwed up click and learn about them straight from the man himself DJ Screw. Talking about how it started and how they met, from both sides.

To me the highlight of the movie is Flip and his Freestyle and Freestyle King award. It’s a rare clip of Flip displaying the now infamous and much missed freestyle skills that broke him into the game. For several mintues he spits off the top of his head to a beat from a nearby car late at night in Houston neighborhood. It’s that raw flow and beat that captures the essence of the Houston hip hop scene and what it was and is. Just some guys trying to come up off the streets with that quick mind and tongue.

Then there’s footage of the man himself DJ Screw mixing it up on the turntables and that’s some rare footage right there, outside of Houston most of you will have never even seen this happen before.

All in all I definitely enjoyed the DVD, the features the bonus video of the orginal Screwed Up Click artists performing on small stages and in clubs. The one thing that really was lacking for me was the exploring of what Screw created outside of the Screwed Up Click. We hear about the guys and about Screw himself but never really hear about what Screwed and Chopped music is and what he did with it.

All in all for any serious rap fan, and definitely for my people in the south in Texas and Louisiana like me this is DVD you want to see, freestyles and performances you’ll want to watch again and again. Take yourself back to where it all came from and remember the man who set it off. RIP DJ Screw!

So go cop this DVD for yourself and check out some free video clips and shit to see what I mean, you can check it all out over at my boy REL’s site SU4C.com
